How often do you go through ziplock bags? If you are like me, I use storage bags DAILY.. Multiple times a day. I use then for snacks, lunches, leftovers, storage, etc… Here are some tips on storage bags.
Storage
Do you remember when ziplock had the half gallon ziplocks? It seemed like it was a very short window of time, but that was literally the BEST size ziplock for so many things! Well, when 2020 happened, the half gallon ziplocks were no longer to be found… Or they were on Amazon for like $30! I am not even sure who would be buying them at that price… but I didn’t like them THAT much.
One day I realized that the produce bags I used from the grocery was a good size and I knew that I could tie it off to seal it. And that is when I decided to go to Amazon and order my first roll of produce bags. That was in March 2021- and that same roll is still going strong!
Ziplock Bags
There is still a need for ziplocks in my house! I do still use them daily, but I have been able to reduce the amount that I use. So, here is what I have found works for me. Here are my pros/cons and uses.
PROS
- Sturdy (especially the Freezer ones)
- Confident closure
- Easy to Open and Close
- Space Saver (a storage container takes up valuable space in my fridge)
CONS
- Quantity to Cost ratio (Est. ~$ .15-50 per bag)
- Sizes can be awkward
- Waste- feel that you are wasting a perfectly good ziplock for something you use for only minutes (like marinating) or only a couple of days (leftovers)
- Availability- Recently, we may have ran into issues at the store where the brands or specific items we usually buy are not available. And this is something I have ran into several times when it came to shopping for ziplocks.
ZIPLOCK BAG USES
- For the Freezer! For foods that I want to freeze, I will use my freezer ziplock bags (gallon or quart)
- Raw Meat/ Soup/ Chili- Remove as much air as possible and Lay Flat to Freeze – This will allow quicker defrost and saves on freezer space.
- Chicken/veggie scraps for a bone broth (I will work on my bone broth recipe)
- Snacks!
- My girls take their breakfast in a snack size ziplock every morning. I also prefer the square snack size and not the rectangular.
Produce Bags
PROS
- Quantity to Cost ratio – (Est $.03-.04 per bag)
- Usability- Thin enough to use for even smaller items and just easily tie it off (see example of shredded cheese in the video)
- Easy to Open and Close (when using the tie method I have)
- Space Saver (a storage container takes up valuable space in my fridge)
CONS
- Very thin – I don’t recommend for items you want to freeze
- Too large and awkward for toddler snack bags
PRODUCE BAG USES
- Homemade Shredded Cheese (example shown in video)
- Marinading (example shown in video)
- Leftovers (example shown in video)
- Storing opened packages (example shown in video)
- Packing Lunch Sandwich or Chips (I will do this for my husband)
- Trash – When I am cutting up my veggies for dinner, I have a little bowl that I use for my trash scraps. I sometimes cover the bowl with the bag so that I throw all my scraps, empty containers such as empty stock, empty cans, etc into the bag.. and when I am done putting dinner together, I just pull up the bag from that bowl and just used it as a trash bag. Very convenient. Example below.
